Monday, August 23rd, 2010 - A Movie Night Special Event: A Dish Best Served Cold - Katalin Varga & No Way Out with Alain Delon

Katalin Varga (2009): Winner of the Silver Berlin Bear in 2009, Director Peter Strickland's debut made a much lauded impression on the international cinema scene. This Romanian-Hungarian-UK production has been compated to the early works of Werner Herzog, and tells the tale of Katalin Varga, a woman who was viciously raped years ago, and now, seeks revenge. A thriller that could perhaps be placed somewhere inbetween the likes of Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (1960) and Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left (1972), if word of mouth is correct, it's not to be missed. The running time is 82 minutes.

No Way Out (aka Tony Arzenta) (1973): And representing the masculine side of vengeance will be this very hard to find Alain Delon thriller from Italian director Duccio Tessari (hence three different titles, as it's also known as "Big Guns"). If you've never seen a Delon film, you're in for a treat. While Tessari's an obscure name on the cinema scene (though he directed the amusing sounding Sundance Cassidy and the Butch Kid, also released in 1969), Delon is an inconic cinematic legend with work like Rocco & His Brothers (1960), Purple Noon (1960) and the extraordinary Le Samourai (1967).

While it is perhaps in bad taste, it is strangely appropriate that we will be serving Rapies (aka Liquid Cocaine) Cocktails for Katalin Varga, and Devilled Eggs (since revenge is a dish best served cold) and Montezuma's Revenge Guacamole for No Way Out.

Please RSVP for showtimes.
